While the Gi vs No-Gi debate rages on in the BJJ community, at Ground Control, we believe both are necessary to develop as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. BJJ No Gi classes help our martial artists to master more Jiu-Jitsu skill for their arsenal. BJJ No Gi classes have a greater correlation to Mixed Martial Arts events and training as MMA competitors are not wearing clothing during a competition. 

 

Many techniques that work for Gi-wearing opponents simply do not work when the Gi is removed, for example, the ever-popular lapel chokes. While your arsenal of techniques will be reduced in BJJ No Gi, your focus and experience using viable submission techniques will increase, as will your ability to use these techniques in real-world situations.

Techniques

BJJ No Gi techniques vary from standard BJJ classes in the following ways:

  • Attire – As the name suggests, BJJ No-Gi is the practice of Jiu-Jitsu wearing a rash guard (tight, spandex-type shirt) and shorts, as opposed to the Gi.

  • Grips – In No-Gi, gripping your opponent becomes far more difficult. The Gi is sturdy, durable, and extremely unlikely to rip. A strong hold on a GI is difficult to break and maneuver out of. In BJJ No-Gi, grips must be altered to account for the skin-tight, slippery rash guard and the lack of the durable, bulky material of the gi.

  • Positioning – In BJJ No-Gi, creating inescapable positions for your opponent becomes far more difficult. Opponents are far more likely to slip or squeeze out of clinches that would work in normal BJJ classes.

  • Techniques – Many techniques that work for Gi wearing opponents like the ever-popular lapel chokes simply do not work when the Gi is removed. While the avialability of effective techniques will be reduced in BJJ No Gi, your focus and experience using viable submission techniques will increase as your ability to use these techniques without the grips that the GI offers increases.
